Roadster Roundup 2009    9/10/09             by Jim St Martin, edited by Mark Byer

While our group was small, we sure had fun at this year's Roadster Roundup, hosted at Pismo Beach by the LA Roadsters over the weekend of September 10-13th.!

The weekend began with a few of the guys and their wives meeting at Joe Scanlin's Ventura Beach Retreat for breakfast on Friday morning.  Joe and Laurie hosted Jerry and Judy Kugel, Mike and Colleen Greene, Tom and Suzie Schauppner, Duane and Suzanne McKinney, Jim and Ann St.Martin and Hank Adams.  A leisurely drive up to Pismo, registration, re-acquaintance with our roadster brethren and a nice dinner rounded out the day.

Jeff and Judy Bates flew up to Oakland on Thursday to rescue his roadster from the clutches of Steve Moal and Company.  Steve and Teresa drove down to Pismo with Jeff and Judy on Thursday.  According to all reports, the car ran great and they experienced no problems.  After a day of local trips on Friday, the car gave a little "burp" from the puke tank which didn't instill confidence.  Saturday they topped it off with a little water and had no problems the rest of the weekend.  I think we are all hoping that these problems are now behind the little black track nosed roadster!

Speaking of mechanical problems, our roadster buddy Ken Thurm was still struggling with his red roadster Friday morning.  Apparently he had to replace the distributor and it didn't arrive until 7:30 Friday morning.  A frantic re-assembly Friday morning and they finally arrived in Pismo late Friday afternoon.  Unfortunately, Ken's mechanical problems weren't over for the weekend.  His starter went south and luckily they were able to find a replacement late Friday afternoon.  Low car, big motor, small space always presents its challenges and Ken was able to get only one bolt in to hold the starter in place until Tina, with her smaller hands and slender fingers, was able t o get the others started to complete the installation.  Of course, this all happened with dinner, dark, breakfast, the next day and a variety of other non-related incidents surrounding the mechanical replacement.  It was finally a successful replacement, but what would a hot rod run be without some mechanical issues?

The LA Boys planned a short run on Saturday from Pismo to Solvang, a casual day of shopping and/or sightseeing, a nice lunch in Solvang with some Scandinavian Folk Dancing to top the afternoon's festivities and then everyone was on their own.  Max Jamiesson took a small group to see where the UC Santa Barbara students go to drink (at least during his time), the Cold Springs Tavern.  A quaint little place that dates back to the mid-1800's - apparently it was a stagecoach stop and much of it remains as it was in those days.  Nice drive, interesting place, I understand that the restaurant is wonderful, someplace that we will have to revisit on one of our runs!

Saturday concluded with a nice dinner at McClintocks in Pismo Beach known for their famous BBQ.  After dinner a DJ started spinning a few tunes and some folks even got up and danced.

Sunday, everyone was on their own schedule for departing - some early, some not so early.  I believe that everyone got home safely and have not heard of any breakdowns.  All-in-all, a good weekend with some roadster buddies!!
