Dick's Fun Run 1    5/04/08      by Mark Byer

Dick Roseberry volunteered to put together a single-day run for the CR’s as a tune up for our annual May run to SLO.   Sunday, May 4, 2008, was chosen for a run to the Palm Springs Air Museum, home to about 50 vintage WWII war birds, including: F4 Wildcat, F6 Hellcat, F7 Tigercat, F8 Bearcat, F14 Tomcat, F18 Hornet, F4 Corsair, TBF Avenger, G21 Grumman Goose, PBY Catalina, B17 Flying Fortress, B25 Mitchell Bomber, P51 Mustang, Spitfire, B26 Invader, P40 Hawk, F16 Falcon, A6 Intruder, A4 Skyhawk, P47 Thunderbolt, T33 Shooting Star and others.

Dick led a group of CR’s from our Sunday morning meeting spot, the Foxfire restaurant, affectionately known as the “Wrinkle Ranch”, at the Imperial Highway off ramp from the 91 Freeway, Anaheim Hills.  In attendance were Dick and Barb Roseberry, Jerry and Judy Kugel, Don and Patty Prieto, Jon and Midge Kennedy, Tony & Karin Correia, Mark and Andi Byer, Chet and Ruby Norris, Frank and Evelyn Currie, Steve Kelly and his brother Tony, Tom Schauppner, and Doug Lindow.

The roadsters headed out about 10 AM to the 15 Freeway, where another member, Hank Adams joined the group in Corona. We cruised out to Temecula and then took the Highway 79 cutoff to grab some crooked two lane asphalt to the Palms to Pines Highway, being the back road into the desert, with a couple of view vistas along the way.

We arrived into the heat of the desert about lunch time and headed to the nearest retail center for bathroom break and shotgun of a few brews.  Upon our arrival at the museum, Dick had arranged for a nice catered lunch with cool drinks before we began checking out the birds.  The guided tour lasted about two hours led by very well informed docents, who were also WWII veterans. We finished up about 4 PM, with the group splitting up for the return trip.  Several couples adjourned to Dick’s motor home kept in Palm Desert for a couple of cool drinks before jumping back on the freeway.

The success of the first Dick’s Fun Run will hopefully lead to becoming an annual event, and may even mature into a two-day event
