Roadster Roundup 2007     September 6-9, 2007      by Mark Byer

There were over 100 roadsters that made the 42nd Annual Roadster Roundup (RR), sponsored this year by the San Jose Roadsters.  The RR is hosted on a rotating basis by the four member clubs (Bay Area Roadsters, San Jose Roadsters, Valley Roadsters and Los Angeles Roadsters).  The San Luis Roadsters and the California Roadsters (CRs) are invitees.  This year's RR was over the September 6-9th weekend in the coastal town of Santa Maria, at the historic Santa Maria Inn.

The CRs participated with twenty roadsters (CRs record) this year, including 37 members/guests, with two members wanting to attend so badly, that they borrowed roadsters from other club members to make the trip.  Now, isn't nice to have a buddy with an extra roadster, that will let you check it out for the weekend.

The RR is the Holy Grail for roadster club members, with the CRs very lucky to be sponsored by our good friends in the Bay Area Roadsters.  Those that have attended prior RRs can attest to the fun of these all roadster weekends at different venues though out our beautiful state.

As always, we like to go up a day early to extend the weekend.  Pres. Tom Schauppner planned our extra day with Joe Scanlin, including a lunch on the beach in Summerland and dinner at the world famous Hitching Post somewhere in the countryside that I couldn't find again on a bet.

Friday we made a lunch run up the coast to Morro Bay, and were back in the afternoon as the rest of the roadster clubs arrived for registration and welcome dinner.

Saturday kicked off with a run through the countryside, ending up at AJ Spurs in Boulton for lunch.  We had the afternoon free to tour the local wineries lead by our club experts Dick Roseberry and Jon Kennedy.  Saturday night included a dinner with a vaudeville type show.

Sunday morning came all too soon, but the weather was perfect for the downhill run home.

The Santa Maria RR is now in the books, but was a great weekend including: seeing old and making new friends, excellent accommodations, nice weather and of course an opportunity to hit the road in an open roadster.

Next year the RR will be hosted by Valley Roadsters in the city of Visalia.  Let start planning for the 43rd RR, and make this event even bigger than Santa Maria
