Roadster Roundup 2004  9/10/04      by Mark Byer

Thanks to the Bay Area Roadsters, our club was invited to participate in our third Roadster Roundup, and we're looking forward to RR No. 40, to be hosted by the LA Roadsters next September in SLO.  Even though several of our guys had conflicts with this year’s date, we managed to be represented by nine members who thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.

The Kugels and Duane arrived a day early to kick back and see the sights; Mark made a early AM solo run to beat the LA traffic and the heat along Highway 99, arriving about 10 AM and getting some pool time before the group rolled in. The Jamiessons made a shorter run inland from Carmel Valley arriving around mid-day.

The main group, including the Roseberrys, Wilcoxs, Correias and Hank had a leisurely breakfast in the O.C. before hitting rush hour traffic, and suffering through the mid-day heat along Highway 99.  Unfortunately, the Kellys had a mechanical breakdown on the way up to Yosemite and missed out on the whole weekend. Well, Steve there is always next year.

The Valley Roadsters picked an excellent venue for RR No. 39 at The Tenaya Lodge in Fish Camp, at the southerly entrance to Yosemite, and planned a very enjoyable weekend.  Friday night kicked off with a steak BBQ at the Sugar Pine Railroad, with a short train ride through the forest to an open air theatre with a local theatrical troop putting on a damsel in distress melodrama.  Yes, the heroine was a saved by the cowboy with the white hat and the villain got justice, and the 80 year old can-can dancers were a hoot, but come on, the ladies should retire their garters.

Saturday was reserved for a roadster run around Bass Lake with a lunch buffet at the Pine Lodge overlooking the lake.  Then back to The Tenaya Lodge for a little rest and relaxation before the dinner banquet and entertainment by none other than the King, Elvis. He actually put on a pretty good show, and said he had over a 1,000 appearances under his massive belt buckle.

The women particularly enjoyed the show especially the ones that got sweaty scarves and kisses.  Hank tried to get a scarf during the performance of Blue Hawaii, but Elvis said not in this lifetime pal, they’re for the ladies.

Well, it seemed like the weekend passed all too quickly, but at 6 AM Sunday morning we headed off for home to beat some of that heat we experienced on our arrival.  A quick run down Route 41 to Highway 99 put us at the Ranch House, at the base of the Grapevine in time for breakfast.  The assault of the Grapevine put us back into the heat and traffic. Welcome to LA.

I’m glad to report that we had no mishaps or breakdowns again this year, and the guys who missed RR No. 39 better start planning for next year’s run to SLO.
