SLO Run 2003  by the California Roadsters   5/15/03      by Mark Byer

May 15th, Thursday early AM, Joe Scanlin and Doug Lindow arrived at the Prieto's for a trip to SLO. The departure was uneventful except for those who expected to see my new car. It was done but NOT shaken down, so I took the sedan. Good thing, as we had 75 books along and would not have had room for Patti if I took the roadster.

Departed for Santa Barbara at 8:50 arrived at 11:30 early. The others pulled in at 12 noon as scheduled. A great lunch and off to SLO.

We arrived about 3:30 and most headed for a nap. Others headed to Jon Kennedy's well supplied bar. He broke out the private label wines...California Roadster Label on each...Cabriolet white...Muroc Red 1932 Vintage.. along with Captain Morgan and Cuervo Gold. The fun began.

Frank and Evelyn thundered in late, having been detained at a court hearing...don't ask...and they joined the fun. We collectively attended the "street Fair" and tasted the food and beverages. There were political booths signing up anyone and everyone. Most of us signed the Davis Recall and got gifts of Dump Davis stickers.

Jon suggested that I put one on the front of the Democrat booth. With some help from Dwayne and Mike and others, I plastered the deal at the precise angle to make it most noticeable. I received loud cheers and accolades.... none were deserved.

After the street fair it was back to Jon's bar for more merry making and telling of lies.

Friday AM we launched for Dave West's magnificent home and garage. On 200 hilltop acres, Dave has a 10,000 feet house and 10,000 feet of garage. The house is modern and the tour was terrific for the ladies and gave them plenty to chat about the rest of the weekend.

The garage housed the Beebe & Mulligan reproduced top fuel front engined dragster and about twenty cars including 5 or so '32s and a 57 Chevy hardtop to die for.

The view was 360 and there was room to park the 50 or so hot rods. The road to the place was terrific and the only problem is some members failed to read the complicated instructions and got lost...no names forthcoming.

This was followed by a nice lunch in Creston Ca. and the drive to the location was terrific.

The only incident of the whole trip was Terry Terrell's MSD failure (third time). Jon towed Terry to SLO and several of our best CR mechanics got it running. Terry will have to give you the details.

We returned to the Peachtree and imbibed some more till it was time to go register. The giveaway this year was a very nice Sweatshirt with the SLO logo and the food was the usual.   Back to more drinking and lies.

Saturday dawned overcast and cool. Roadster guys bundled up and we were placed in the center of the big lawn together for all to see. There were 285 cars on display and the weather improved greatly and ended up perfect.

The show ended with the giveaway of the model roadster and Don Montgomery, Jack Stewart, and I signed and gave away one book each. The drive out was quick and proper.

Saturday night we had the usual dinner but we invited the owners of the Peachtree to be our guests and Terry made enough toasts to fill the evening. After a terrific meal, it was back to Jon's bar for more drinks and lies.

The Kugel's left very early for Riverside, and the Doug Thorley Open House . . . Dwayne left equally early for the dry lakes, and Terry left at 5 AM to limp home.

The rest of us left around 9 AM and had a leisurely drive home.

Everyone had a great time, including Terry, and are looking forward to going again next year.
